For abdominal scans, drink water beforehand — a full bladder improves image quality. For transvaginal scans, an empty bladder is preferred.

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves — not radiation — and is completely safe at all stages of pregnancy. It is routinely recommended for all pregnant women.

How should I prepare for a pelvic ultrasound?

For a transabdominal pelvic scan, drink 1 litre of water 1 hour before and avoid urinating — a full bladder improves image quality. For a transvaginal scan, an empty bladder is preferred.

How long does an ultrasound take?
