What is HSG and Why is it Important?

HSG (Hysterosalpingography) is a specialist X-ray procedure in which contrast dye is introduced into the uterus to examine the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. It is one of the most important diagnostic investigations in a female fertility workup — revealing whether the fallopian tubes are open and identifying any uterine abnormalities that may affect conception.

What to Expect During the HSG Procedure

Timing

HSG is typically performed between day 7 and day 10 of your cycle — after bleeding stops but before ovulation.

Preparation

No fasting required. A painkiller taken 30–60 minutes before the procedure is often recommended to minimise discomfort.

Procedure

Contrast dye is gently introduced through the cervix. X-ray images are taken as the dye fills the uterus and tubes. The procedure takes approximately 15–30 minutes.

After the Procedure

Mild cramping and spotting for 1–2 days is normal. You can usually return to normal activities the same day.

Results

Your Gynaecologist reviews the HSG images with you immediately and explains the findings.
